The Clarion Golden Eagles Women’s Soccer Team took on Slippery Rock at Memorial Stadium Saturday night. Clarion could not find the net once again, falling with a final score of 1-0.
This is the second time this season that Clarion has lost to Slippery Rock with a score of 1-0.
On Sept. 12, they held the game scoreless for 88 minutes until the Rock was able to find the back of the net.
Jill Miller said, “The first time we lost to Slippery Rock, they scored with only a little more than a minute left in the game, and we felt robbed. So, I think that had to do with how intense we played on Saturday against them again. Our team is so good, we are just having trouble getting the results because we just can’t seem to score goals.”
Miller attempted two shots; one was able to find Slippery Rocks goalkeeper, Alli Bird.
Jordan Daloisio and Erin White each added one more shot, but no one could find the back of the net for Clarion.
The game remained scoreless till after halftime when Slippery Rock’s, Shelby Layman, found the net at 50:48. She was able to get the ball in the lower left corner, right behind Clarion’s goalkeeper, Jenna Kulik. Layman’s goal would stand alone for the rest of the game.
Kulik was able to register four saves, but just could not keep that fifth shot out of the net.
Kylie Keeney said about Kulik, “She has been extraordinary this season, especially with her saved penalty shot against Edinboro on Oct. 6.”
Miller said, Kulik “usually keeps us in the game. She comes up with amazing saves that end up keeping the game close and keeps our momentum going.”
Slippery Rock’s goalie, Bird, was credited with her third shutout of the season.
She only had to save one shot Saturday, which made it easy for her shutouts to stay alive.
Bird has only let one shot slide past her and into the goal in 425 minutes of play.
During the first half Clarion had one corner kick, but just could not find anyone to get the ball in front of the net. Slippery Rock also had one corner kick the first half.
During the first half, each team registered four fouls.
The second half brought Clarion two more corner kicks and six more fouls.
Slippery Rock added four corner kicks and one foul for that half. Slippery Rock also received two offside calls for the game.
Crystal Miller said, “One thing our team has been working towards lately is putting the ball in the back of the net. We have a lot of talent both offensively and defensively, but we are trying to get our midfielders and forwards into the attack and capitalize on all of our chances.”
Jill Miller said, “Obviously our biggest problem is our attack especially just finishing the ball. We should have just taken more shots and capitalized on the opportunities we had, because we had better chances than they did.”
Kylie Keeney said, “As a team we have a difficult time scoring goals.” Hopefully the Golden Eagles will be able to fix this difficulty before the end of the season.
Jordan Daloisio said, “We obviously still have room for improvement and our offense needs to try to create more scoring opportunities.”
It looks like everyone thinks the team needs to work on scoring, and hopefully we will be able to see the ladies find the back of the net before the season ends.
In preparing for the game that was held Tuesday, Jill Miller said, “We obviously focused on creating and finishing an attack.
Also, they have one very strong player on the Mercyhurst team so we focused on stopping her in hopes to be able to shut the whole team down and get them off their game.”
The Ladies now have a record of 4-10-2 and 0-9-1 PSAC-West.
The team came back on Tuesday to face Gannon.
Despite two shots on goal from Beth Ellen Dibeler, the Eagles fell with a final score of 1-0.
Danielle Riley also had two shots on goal for the Golden Eagles. Despite the loss, goalkeeper Jenna Kulik made nine saves.
The team will be hosting Gannon on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. They are hoping to get off their losing streak.
