Sherry leads Clarion men’s basketball past UDC
The Golden Eagles men’s basketball team were 66.7% from behind the arc thanks to Mike Sherry and Paul McQueen, beating the University of District of Columbia 83-70 on
Monday, Nov. 29.
Sherry was 6-9 from three-point land, and McQueen was perfect, hitting four of four from downtown.
They combined for 42 of the Golden Eagles 83 points, leading the Golden Eagles to their third straight win to start the season.
Coming into the game McQueen had only hit two, three pointers in his career.
“In the offseason, it was something that I just worked on,” McQueen said.
“We all look to add something to our games every year, and Coach Ron Righter has given me confidence by telling me to shoot it.”
Sherry, on the other hand is known for being a three-point specialist.
He now has the fifth most three pointers in Clarion history with 185.
Sherry knew from the beginning that it could be a big game for him.
“I kind of got the feeling I was on after I made my second shot,” Sherry said.
“Everything seemed to feel right and in rhythm. This was a good win for us because we had to go on the road to get it.”
Although Sherry and McQueen led the team in scoring, they weren’t the only ones whoshowed up.
Jamar Harrison and Lloyd Harrison had 14 points each, and freshman Mike Kromka added eight points.
The game was competitive early.
At one point in the first half UDC was up 21-20.
That was the last time UDC would be close.
The Golden Eagles finished the half on a 21-4 run and were up 41-25 at halftime.
Clarion held the Firebirds off for the rest of the game and improved their record to 3-0.
The Golden Eagles have been able to pick up where they left off last year, in large part due to their team chemistry.
“Our chemistry on the floor, we are playing very well together and talking a lot more on defense,” Lloyd Harrison said.
“We are moving the ball well and still getting better as a unit after every game.”
The Golden Eagles will try to improve its record to 4-0 when its host Michigan Dearborn University on Monday, Dec. 6.
Tip off is set for 7 p.m. at Tippin Gym.
