The men’s rugby team dominated Saturday afternoon with a 58-0 win over Duquesne, while the girls lost in a scrimmage against Rocky Grove.
The win for the men’s team improves their record to 4-1 on the season with three matches left. The girl’s team has a record of 2-4.
“We did a lot well. It was a full team effort and a good solid performance all around. Our defense was phenomenal,” said Jarrod Lovelace.
The men’s team routed Duquesne with 10 tries and four kicks in the match.
Each try is worth five points while kicks are worth two points, for a total of seven points when scoring.
The team only made four kicks after their tries during the match.
As for what the team can do to improve for their remaining matches, Lovelace said the team can always try to get better.
One such area they could improve in is conditioning.
“We played pretty solid but there’s always room for improvement,” said Lovelace.
Girl’s Head Coach Brian Frank said the match on Saturday was a chance for the new players and reserve players to get some playing time.
Even though they lost the match, the experience was very beneficial.
“Right now we are in a transition period, we will be graduating about eight senior starters this spring, so we are really working hard to get our new players up to speed and ready to step in and play as starters in the fall,” said Frank.
Rugby adviser Dr. Hallie Savage stated the girls team is very much cohesive and supportive of one another.
“The senior members are excellent leaders and give support to the younger team members,” said Savage.
Next up for both teams are tournaments in Chicago this upcoming weekend. On Saturday, April 17, the men’s team will be participating in the Collegiate Men’s Division III Tournament.
Seeded No. 1 for the Allegheny Union, they will face off against the Minnesota Union No. 1 seed University of St. Thomas.
Lovelace said with plenty of guys with experience on the team, they are as mentally prepared as any other team going into a tournament such as this.
Frank said the girl’s team will be participating in the NIU Tournament of Champions this weekend.
His outlook for the weekend is confident as they are taking a very capable experienced group into the tournament.
“This may be the last time that many of these senior girls get the opportunity to play with each other.
“It is a tough tournament, said Frank. I expect these girls to go out there and play their best rugby this season and to bring home some hardware,” said Frank.
