Johnson leads Golden Eagles women swimmers to fifth-place finish in Akron
It was a record-setting performance for Clarion senior Kaitlyn Johnson, as the Clarion women’s swimming and diving team had a strong three-day performance finishing fifth of
12 teams at the Zippy Invitational at Akron University.
Ohio University won the event with 1,562 points.
Clarion finished with 919 points.
Johnson broke Clarion school records in the 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle and the 100-meter butterfly.
She finished second in the 50-meter freestyle (23.20).
She also swam a record 23.09 in the preliminaries, which also set a meet record.
She broke her own record of 23.15.
Johnson also set a meet and pool record, finishing first in the 100 free (50.07) topping her previous record of 50.79.
She also finished second in the 100 fly with a record time of 54.89, breaking the school record set by Bethany Bankovich of 55.61.
Johnson, along with Kayla Shull, Kelly Connolly and Gina Mattucci, won and helped set new school records.
They also had NCAA qualifying times in the 200 and 400 free relays.
The 200 free relay swam a time of 1:34.00, and the 400 free won with a time of 3:27.81.
Both of which are school records.
The same relay team, Shull, Connolly, Johnson and Mattucci, also won the 200 medley and 400 medley relays, while swimming D-II national qualifying times of 1:44.25 and
3:48.54.
In individuals, Shull was third in the 100 back with a time of 56.54, seventh in the 100-meter freestyle (2:08.76) and 12th in the 50 free (24.09).
Connolly won the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:04.91, while placing seventh in the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:25.34 – all NCAA “B” qualifying cuts.
Mattucci meanwhile placed fifth in the 50 free (23.93), sixth in the 100 free (52.41) and 10th in the 100 backstroke (58.38).
