Golden Eagles women’s basketball picks up win against SRU
The Golden Eagles women’s basketball team grabbed a conference victory this past Saturday, Feb. 5, beating Slippery Rock University 52-45.
Freshman Emma Fickel started things off for Clarion when she splashed home a three-pointer to give the Golden Eagles the early lead.
It was junior Courtney Healy’s turn next from behind the arc, and she nailed it.
The first half went back and forth between the two teams, resulting in 13 lead changes.
Slippery Rock’s Shannon Lee hit two free throws at the end of the half giving them the lead 22-21.
The second half belonged to the Golden Eagles.
The last time Clarion would trail in the game was with 15:31 to go, with the score 29-28.
Fickel drained another three pointer putting the Golden Eagles up 31-29, and they never looked back.
“We played really well as a team and worked together,” Fickel said.
“Also, our defense played a big factor. We were able to stop them. Going into our next games we are building our confidence level up.”
Everyone contributed during the second half run.
“From this win we can see the things that we still need to work on and what we have improved on,” freshman Mackenzie Clark said.
“We are improving every day, and to get a win gives us confidence, and we should and can carry that over to our upcoming games.”
Fickel led the team with 14 points.
Freshman Ann Deibert added 11, and freshman, Lauren Savulchak, had 12, including four free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
“I was successful in the fact that I was focused and ready to play some basketball,” Savulchak said.
“I will carry it into the next game with the same approach, focused and ready to go,” Savulchak said.
The Golden Eagles were back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 9, when they hosted Gannon University.
Clarion picked up their second consecutive conference victory with a 66-65 nailbiter at Tippin Gymnasium.
Savulchak had a monster game recording 24 points and chipping in nine rebounds.
Also scoring in double figures for the Golden Eagles was Fickel with 10 points.
Clarion will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 12, against Edinboro.
