The Golden Eagles women’s soccer team failed to pick up a win over the weekend dropping the first game on Friday, Sept. 23, to Millersville 1-0, and on
Saturday, Sept. 24, to No. 12 West Chester 4-0.
“This weekend at times we played very well in fairness, I think the results are somewhat misleading in terms of the actual win and losses,” coach Rob Eaton
said.
“Truth is, we’ve been struggling for a couple of weeks, and I’d say this weekend we got back to being somewhat competitive.”
On Friday, Clarion (3-4-1) and Millersville (4-2-1) were scoreless until the 62nd minute when Kelsey Mattola scored, giving the Marauders a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles fought hard in the final minutes to tie it up, but were unsuccessful falling 1-0.
“This was a sore one to lose,” Eaton said. “I thought for long periods we were the better team on the field.”
Freshman goalie Laura Saussol had eight saves, and only gave up the one goal.
“We have to just play together, and once a goal goes in we can’t put our heads down. We have to keep fighting to win it back,” Saussol said.
The next day Clarion hosted No. 12 West Chester (5-1-3).
Clarion played one of its best halves of the year holding the No. 12 team scoreless going into halftime.
The second half was a different story.
In the 55th minute West Chester’s Brianna Hires broke the scoreless tie when she scored off a Jen Hutchinson assist. Five minutes later Hires scored once again
off another Hutchinson assist, giving them a 2-0 lead. Marie D’Angelo made it 3-0 in the 85th minute with a goal of her own.
The final goal was scored a minute later when Hires scored her third of the game giving her a hat trick and giving West Chester a 4-0 victory.
“I thought the first half was probably the best we played all year in terms of being competitive,” Eaton said.
“You have to remember West Chester is the No. 12 team in the country. I think it all came down to experience in this game, and they showed their experience.
They’ve been here before, and knew how to deal with it.”
The Golden Eagles will be back in action when it host Indiana University of Pennsylvania Saturday, Oct. 1, at noon at Memorial Stadium.
