The Clarion Golden Eagles women’s basketball team put up quite a battle this past Saturday, Feb. 12, at McComb Fieldhouse at Edinboro University.

The effort fell short though, and Edinboro won the game 68-57.

Edinboro improved to 9-1 in the PSAC West and 19-3 overall.

Clarion fell to 3-7 in conference and 6-16 overall.

In past years, the fighting Scots have had their way with the Golden Eagles.

That was not the case Saturday.

Clarion didn’t back down to the challenge and was right there throughout the whole first half.

The Golden Eagles were coming off a two-game winning streak and carried over the momentum to this game.

Clarion showed up ready to play, and was back and forth with the Fighting Scots throughout the first half.

Once again, freshman Emma Fickel got things started with a three, giving the Golden Eagles the early lead.

Junior Courtney Healy and freshman Mackenzie Clark also had a strong first half keeping Clarion in the game.

Heading into the second half, Edinboro was up 33-29.

The Fighting Scots came out to play, and went on a 9-0 run, giving them a 42-29 lead early in the half.

“I think because we did fairly well the first half, we got too comfortable and let them play their game for the first four minutes or so of the second half,” junior Joanna Catalano
said.

“It was pretty much a four-minute stretch that cost us the game.”

With 6:54 to go in the game, Edinboro took their largest lead at 63-46, and was looking more like themselves.

Clarion didn’t give up though.

In the last seven minutes, the Golden Eagles held Edinboro to only five points and went on a 11-5 run.

The final push was impressive but wasn’t enough to overcome the large deficit.

Clark had her best game of the season, scoring a team high 15 points, adding six rebounds and four assists.

“I feel like my game was so good because our coach said to take it to the basket and we would get fouled, so thats what I did,” Clark said.

Healy had a strong game with eight points and 10 boards.

Freshman Raven Jones filled the stats sheet with 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Catalano also had double figures with 10 points.

Clarion will return home on Saturday, Feb. 19, when it hosts Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Tip off at Waldo S. Tipping gymnasium is set for 5:30 p.m.
