The Clarion Golden Eagles men’s basketball team hosted Slippery Rock University on Saturday, Feb 5.
This was the first encounter between the teams since Clarion lost to The Rock by 10 on Jan. 12.
This time around, however, The Rock had to play at Waldo S. Tippin gymnasium in front of the Clarion faithful, where the Golden Eagles are 10-2.
The Golden Eagles line- up did have some slight changes at the beginning of the game.
On top of injured center Paul McQueen, the Golden Eagles were also missing forward/center Quintus “Bud” Teer for most of the game.
Clarion was still able jump out on The Rock early even with those key absences.
The Golden Eagles lead 31-12 with 5:29 left in the first half.
That wouldn’t be the case in the second half as The Rock used a 26-4 run to climb back into the game and defeat the Golden Eagles 79-71.
The loss pushed the Golden Eagles conference record to 3-5.
“I really think that I could have had a bigger impact in the game if I had started,” Teer said.
Teer wasn’t the only Golden Eagle that missed some time.
Senior point guard Lloyd Harrison was hit with a double technical that got him kicked out the game.
This also lead to his absence in Monday’s game versus the University of District Columbia. Replacing him was sophomore guard Leonard Patterson.
It would take the efforts of Patterson, Teer and guard Jamar Harrison to lead the Golden Eagles in the second game of their three-game home stand.
That is exactly what they did as Teer put up 24 points and added 23 boards to go with it.
This is the most rebounds a Golden Eagle has pulled down since Terry Roseto pulled down 23 in 1977.
Patterson also had a solid game adding eight points, four rebounds and three assists of his own.
The Golden Eagles got the win from a great overall team effort against University of District of Columbia.
“I didn’t know that I would have to miss a whole game after the double technical, it will never happen again, I can’t wait to play Mercyhurst,” point guard Lloyd Harrison said.
The Golden Eagles were back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium.
Clarion took another heartbreaking conference loss, this time to Mercyhurst University, 61-60.
The Golden Eagles fell to 3-6 in the PSAC-West, while Mercyhurst continued their dominance with a 9-0 conference record.
With the game tied at 60-60, Merychurst’s Bill Weaver made one of two free throws with 2.8 seconds left to take a 61-60 lead.
The Golden Eagles were not able to inbound the ball, giving Merychurst the one point victory.
Shelton Jackson led Mercyhurst with 20 points.
Jamar Harrison finished the game with 19 points, while Teer added 18 points and 13 rebounds.
Clarion will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 12, against Edinboro.
