Last Friday night, Oct. 22, Clarion University’s women’s volleyball team came back from a 1-0 deficit to beat Indiana University of Pennsylvania 3-1.
The win was led by a three-headed monster for the Golden Eagles.
Juniors Kellie Bartman and Kaitlyn Anderson, and sophomore Rebecca Webb all had double-digit kills.
Bartman led the way with 17 kills to go along with seven digs.
Anderson had a volleyball double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs.
Webb added 11 kills and eight blocks.
“I think it says a lot about the fact that we can terminate from several different areas on the floor,” fourth year head coach Jennifer Harrison said.
Clarion was without starting junior setter, Amanda Gough, due to a prematch injury.
Sophomore backup setter, Rebecca Beightol, took Gough’s place.
She had 42 assists along with 23 digs, two kills and a block.
“Rebecca has been in our gym for two years now, and I have complete confidence in her ability to take over,” Harrison said.
Junior Rhianon Brady contributed with 38 digs, while fellow junior Kayla Rodak added 15 of her own.
The Golden Eagles returned to action Saturday afternoon as they traveled to California University of Pennsylvania. Clarion came away with a 3-2 victory.
“I think it says that we are willing to fight and can be as successful on the road,” Harrison said.
Beightol played a big role in Saturday’s game, as she got her second consecutive start.
She finished with 47 assists, 15 digs, two aces and a kill.
Bartman, Anderson and Webb continued their strong play, all having double-digit kills for the second straight game.
Bartman had 19 with four assists and three blocks.
Anderson had 19 kills, while Webb added 11 kills and three blocks.
Freshman Hannah Heeter had four kills, five blocks, four assists and four digs.
Brady added 23 digs on defense, while Rodak had nine.
Clarion led the match 2-0 before dropping the next two sets.
The Golden Eagles got the 15-12 victory in the fifth and deciding set.
The win snapped a six- year losing streak at CalU.
“Cal is a tough team that is very well coached. I am really proud of the team’s ability to keep their composure, especially after dropping the third and fourth sets,” Harrison said.
Clarion improved to 22-3 overall and 14-1 in the PSAC-West.
