The Clarion Golden Eagles baseball team took a cross-state trip to Mansfield University on Saturday, March 19, to face off in a doubleheader against the Mountaineers.

Hopes were high for the Golden Eagles, as they attempted for an upset against the perennially successful Mansfield, but failed to pull out a win in either game.

Clarion junior Brandon Slater, 0-3 this year, started pitching for the Golden Eagles and faced off against the Mountaineer’s 3-0 ace, Eric Rosenberger in game one of the
doubleheader.

Slater went 2 2/3 innings, seceding nine hits and six runs.

Freshman Mike Dunn picked up where Slater left off, and worked for a solid 3 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and three runs, only two of which were earned runs.

Both Clarion pitchers were able to strike out one batter each.

Mansfield’s Rosenberger cruised through five innings.

The Golden Eagles managed four hits and two runs off him, and three hits and one run against Rosenberg’s relief, Andy Young.

Mansfield easily took game one by a score of 9-3.

Clarion’s junior centerfielder, Josh Beimel, led the offense with a perfect 3-3 day at the plate and a run scored.

The five foot nine inch Beimel looks to make a big impact in Clarion’s offensive lineup this year.

Senior Eric Panko, 0-3 record this year for Clarion, and Joe Candelmo for Mansfield matched up in game two of the doubleheader.

Candelmo put up a good start, going six full innings and giving up only two hits and one run.

Panko, handed Mansfield eight runs on nine hits in only 4 1/3 innings of work.

Clarion junior Mark White came in relief, but failed to hold the Mountaineers.

Mansfield pounded five hits and four runs against White.

None of Clarion’s hitters managed to rack up more than one hit each during the game.

Mansfield glided to its second victory of the day, 12-1.

This pushed Mansfield’s record up to 8-3, and Clarion’s down to 2-13.

For Clarion junior catcher Ken Morgan, the team needs to improve in many areas to achieve the kind of success they’ve been working for.

“When your in the position our team is in right now it is just not one thing that is going wrong, it is a number of things,” Morgan said.

“We have to advance as a team and develop as a team in every area if we want to be successful.”

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Friday, March 25, when they host Mercyhurst University.

This marks the beginning of conference play for the Golden Eagles.

“This will mark the actual start of our season. I’m excited about our conference play this year because I think we will be very productive,” Morgan said.
