The Clarion Golden Eagle’s baseball team started its season over break in North and South Carolina.

On their spring break, the Golden Eagles came out with a record of 2-11 to start their season.

Before traveling down south, the Golden Eagle’s started their season off at Millersville University.

The Golden Eagles showed their rustiness by getting swept 7-1 and 7-3 in the doubleheader.

With two games under their belts, the Golden Eagle’s were ready for their trip.

Their first game was against Mount Olive University in North Carolina.

Clarion never came close in this contest, falling 17-4.

The following day, the Golden Eagles finally picked up their first pair of victories in the young season against St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

Clarion took the first game 8-7 in extra innings.

Junior third baseman Scott Berkes led the Golden Eagles with a four-hit game. Berkes also drove on one run and scored a run of his own.

Along with his stellar performance at the plate, Berkes also came in relief to pick up the win.

He went two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four batters.

In the nightcap of the doubleheader, Clarion came out with an easy 6-1 victory.

Junior shortstop Jericho Weitzel was the offensive star in the game going 2-2 with three runs scored and two walks.

Freshman Mike Dunn pitched a complete game, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out eight.

Since the two wins, the Golden Eagles have gone on a little bit of a skid.

In their last eight games, the Golden Eagles have lost them all, including five losses by at least 10 runs.

After returning to Clarion, they took a pit stop at Shippensburg University to play a weekend series.

The Golden Eagles fell in all three games they played, including a 12-0 and 13-0 defeat.

Weitzel leads all starters in batting average, hits and RBIs in the early season.

Junior catcher Ken Morgan, who led the team in all offensive categories last year, is the only Golden Eagle to record a home run this year.

Dunn and Berkes have picked up the two wins for the Golden Eagle pitching staff.

Dunn is 1-1 with a 5.79 ERA on the season. Berkes, who also splits time at third base, is 1-1 with a 11.81 ERA.

Clarion will be back in action on Friday, March 18, at Mansfield University.

The two teams will continue their miniseries on Saturday, March 19, at Clarion’s Memorial field, weather permitting.

The Golden Eagles‘ home conference opener will be on Friday March 25 against Mercyhurst University.
