Clarion University recorded their first two home victories of the year, as they swept the double-header versus non conference opponent Washington Adventist, 6-3 and 10-5 respectively.
The Golden Eagles also got a great pitching performance from two freshmen.
Luke Prazenica and Billy Ruhland each picked up their first career victories in the sweep.
Game one started out as a pitcher’s duel as both teams were scoreless through the first three innings.
Finally in the fourth, the Clarion bats erupted for four runs.
Sophomore Ken Morgan connected on a RBI double scoring junior Sean Zimmerman, who doubled to start the rally.
With one out and runners on second and third, freshmen Spencer White delivered the big blow with his three run home run, increasing the lead to 4-0.
Clarion tacked on two more insurance runs in the fifth inning, making it 6-0.
With one out and the bases loaded senior slugger Jason Krimsky delivered on a two run single, plating Erik Kempton and Scott Berkes.
After cruising through the first six innings, Prazenica gave way to sophomore Brandon Slater after allowing a leadoff walk.
That run came around to score, giving Clarion a 6-1 lead.
Slater allowed two more runs in the seventh inning before securing the 6-3 victory.
Prazenica earned his first career victory going six innings, allowing one run on four hits, while recording five walks and five strikeouts.
Sophomore Tom Briley, Krimsky, and Morgan led the offense with two hits each, while Spencer White led the team with three RBI’s.
Game two of the doubleheader got off to a rocky start as freshmen Kevin Gnacinski was only able to go one inning allowing four runs, before being relieved by fellow freshmen Ruhland.
After allowing another run to increase the deficit to 5-0, Ruhland found the zone, shutting down the opposition the rest of the way.
The Golden Eagles started chipping into Washington Adventist’s lead scoring three runs in the second inning.
After the first two batters quickly were retired, back to back walks to junior Dane Dobson and sophomore Mark White set up sophomore Kevin Keebler single in a run, while the second run came around to score on an error.
Keebler then scored on Briley’s single which was then mishandled by the center fielder.
Clarion took the lead in the fourth inning, recording another three runs to go ahead 6-5.
Berkes singled with runners on first and second, scoring Keebler. Clarion then tied the game on a bases loaded walk by Zimmerman.
Morgan then put the Golden Eagles ahead for good on an RBI single of his own.
Clarion was able to break the game open with four runs in the fifth on five hits.
Keebler recorded his third hit of the game, plating Mark White on a RBI single.
Berkes then singled scoring Keebler.
On the play, Briley came around to score on an error. Kempton rounded out the scoring with a RBI double, scoring Berkes.
Ruhland picked up his first career win going six innings in relief, allowing one run (unearned) on seven hits.
“It was a great feeling to get that first win,” said Ruhland. “You don’t expect to get a lot of wins coming out of the bullpen, but I’m glad I was able to help my team win.”
Leading the offense was Briley with four hits, Keebler with three hits and two RBI’s, Berkes with two hits and two RBI’s,and Kempton and Krimsky each with two hits.
Clarion was back in action on Tuesday, but with much different results.
Point Park University visited Clarion, coming away with 12-11 and 8-6 (in eight innings) victories. Clarion led 11-5 in game one before surrendering the game.
On the day, Krimsky was perfect at the plate, going an impressive 7-7 with two RBI’s and five runs scored.
Also leading the way was Morgan, going 5-7 with five RBI’s.
“Our team is really starting to hit like we were down in South Carolina,” said Morgan.
We have a lot of talent and we are starting to show it. It is a lot of fun when we hit the ball like we have been.”
Clarion will be back in action on Friday as they travel to conference rival IUP.
The game is set to start at 1 p.m.
