Clarion University prepares to make the switch to Eagle Mail

CLARION, Pa., Feb. 11 – Clarion University is preparing to switch over to a new e-mail system.  Eagle Mail, the new Internet service, is in conjunction with Microsoft.

The new e-mail system, which will be implemented on Feb. 16, will give users 10 gigabytes of storage space, as well as  a new modified format of address.  Also, it will allow students to keep their new address after graduating.

Other features of the e-mail will be 20 megabytes of e-mail attachment, additional tools for mobile e-mail checking, and other bundled packages such as Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Spaces, and more.

This is a change from the school’s previous storage limit of 10 megabytes and 3,000 kilobytes of attachments.

The new format will function as f.m.lastname@eagle.clarion.edu  In order to activate the account, students will activate it through the old account, by filling out personal information for security and picking a new password, as well as a back-up address in case the new password is forgotten.

All new mail will be forwarded from students’ old email account to the new Eagle Mail account.

Also, it will be possible for students to transfer over their vital saved emails. However, Sam Puleio of computing services said the new e-mail service is exclusive for e-mail. “Eagle Mail is just mail,” Puleio says.

The rest of student accounts do not change; Blackboard will remain the same, as will student services.

Mathew Karda, freshman computer sciences major at Clarion University, said he has mixed feelings on the matter. “I don’t think we need to change, but I’m happy with it because we’re getting new servers, and that makes it easier for me to work on.  This will let me do more work, and make my work faster.”

Nathan Weber, sophomore accounting major at Clarion University, has generally positive views on the matter.

“It’s going to be sweet.  We can keep our e-mail after graduating.”A notice was sent last Saturday, and there will be two more notices to follow reminding students of the change.
