Hoke gets shaved head

Comments Off 12 November 2009

CLARION, Pa., Nov. 12 – The Gemmell Rotunda will be turned into a temporary barber shop tonight when Interim Director of Campus Life Shawn Hoke gets his head shaved.

The kicker is that it was his idea.

Last spring, Hoke challenged the Interfraternity Council to boost their GPA and he would willingly go bald.

The four fraternites in Clarion; Phi Delta Theta, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Phi Mu Alpha and Sigma Phi Epsilon jumped on the opportunity.

The fraternities were able to bring their overall GPA up to a 3.0.

“The individual chapters brought it up at every meeting as a reminder,” said IFC Vice President of Recruitment Andrew Naugle.

The involved fraternities spent some time at the library to achieve the 3.0 goal.

Depending on the individuals’ standing GPA, it would determine how many hours were spent at the library. For example, if a fraternity member had a 2.5 or below, he had to spend 10 hours studying. A 2.5 to 2.8 GPA got them eight hours, 2.8 to 3.0 called for six hours, 3.0 to 3.4 had to spend four hours and those with a 3.4 to 3.9 invested two hours every week in the library. Even those who had a 4.0 still had to spend an hour in the library.

The studying paid off, and now the clippers are coming out with Hoke’s name on them.

“I hope he knows what he’s getting himself into,” said Naugle.

All five members of the IFC will have a chance to shave some of Hoke’s noggin.

IFC President Andrew Bostjancic, Vice President of Risk Management Kurt Miller, Naugle, Secretary Richard Joyce and Treasurer Anthony Licata will be the first to test their tressing skills.

“If there’s any hair left, it will go out to members of the fraternities,” said Naugle.

There are nearly 100 members who make up Clarion University’s fraternities.

The festivities will kick off at 7 p.m. tonight in Gemmell Student Complex. Refreshments will be provided for participants, and all are welcome to come witness Hoke receiving his makeshift haircut.

“He definitely has a surprise on his hands,” said Naugle.
