One of the things we at The Call value most about putting our articles online is giving readers the opportunity to post comments. Over the past school year, our readers have offered new and insightful takes on the issues, liberal praise and condemnation of articles, bad jokes and good insults, and even the occasional “good job!” Here’s a selection of some gems from our comments over the past two semesters, in chronological order:
“Where the heck are the guys? Last time I checked men were grossly underrepresented at the university [...] Men’s studies department anyone?”
— A ’95 alumnus, on gender issues at Clarion.
Status of Women commission begins recruiting, September 16, 2010.
“The community and University of Clarion should take it upon themselves to look into possible rehabiliation projects for the now vacant factory [...] rather then tearing down old buildings, spending tons of money on new ones, and increasing the total titution costs for the students as well as increasing expenses for the University, they could rehabilitate a building that already exists.”
— Mark Liberto, on the O-I glass plant facility.
Clarion feels impact of plant closing, September 23, 2010.
“I edited hundreds of articles written by my peers. I recall errors in spelling, pronoun agreement and tense shifts, but the most absurd was text-like writing. Students would actually write, ‘ur’ for ‘your’ and ‘thru’ for ‘through.’ To make matters worse, these people graduated with honors!”
— Ally Moore, on the rise of text-speak in college writing.
Study shows decline in writing skills, October 14, 2010.
“What’d you think of the Superbowl? Personally I thought Aguilera NAILED the national anthem! …and by nailed I mean
nailed it to a cross and crucified it… Black Eyed Peas did a nice job performing the 3 songs people know, then playing their first one again.”
— Kyle Mumper, on the Super Bowl XLV halftime show.
The Music Box: Upcoming music for 2011, February 3, 2011.
“Yes the music is unique and different, but that’s what makes it special. Each song provides a depth of feeling we all have experienced within our lifetime. We like to think of life as perfect but we all know you need the hurt to understand the happiness. You can’t understand one without the other.”
— User hfaulk, on musician Bright Eyes.
The Music Box: Bright Eyes, February 17, 2011.
“I liked your article but you left out a serious point that the frack water is also radioactive and is being delivered and processed at the Ridgeway water treatment facility [...] The recent
New York Times article has exposed that the EPA has known about this for some time and has suppressed the information.”
— Joe Melcher, on the radioactive byproducts of fracking.
Marcellus panel discusses fracking in state, March 3, 2011.
— Jennifer Kandt, on the 2011 animated film Rango‘s impact on children.
Animated ‘Rango’ not just for kids, March 17, 2011.
“Love the the quote — ‘Even though there are many facts supporting the teacher’s union, there are surprisingly students for the cuts.’ With phrasing like that, you should have filed this report under the opinion section [...] Perhaps the Communications department should do a teach in on how to do objective reporting.”
— Clarion alumnus Eric Foster, on media bias.
VIDEO: APSCUF Rally (WCUB-TV), March 24, 2011.
“Women’s clinics are medical facilities that give patients factual information AND offer counseling before any decision is made. [...]
Crisis Pregnancy Centers, on the other hand, are non-medical proselytization centers that frequently lie to women about made-up health risks associated with abortion.”
— Emily Young, on deception in pro-life pregnancy counseling.
Anti-choice philosophy decried, April 20, 2011.
“Abortion is perhaps the most heinous crime against humanity. At over 3300 killed a DAY in the USA, it is also by far the most popular. Slavery never did that.”
— Sean, on the prevalence of abortion in America.
Anti-choice philosophy decried, April 20, 2011.
“You cannot reason with these people. They are so narrow minded that it isn’t funny. [...] This is a losing battle. These people do not reason nor do they have a shed of common sense or decency towards anybody with opposing views.”
— Nate, on arguing with pro-choice advocates.
Anti-choice philosophy decried, April 20, 2011.
“Human life scientifically, medically, and morally begins at conception. At that point we know that a new distinct human being begins his/her formation into the person he/she is destined to become.”
— Tim, on when life begins.
Anti-choice philosophy decried, April 20, 2011.
“The point of the cartoon is that according to the logic of pro-lifers, God first gives a soul and humanity to a zygote at the moment of conception, and then turns around and terminates the pregnancy up to half of the time. Why would God bother to do this, most of the time before a woman even knows she’s pregnant?”
— Clarion Call cartoonist Mike Ramsey, on the belief that life begins at conception.
Cartoon: I’ll Pray For You, April 28, 2011.
“Mike, the logic you are using is twisted. When anyone at any age dies you would have to blame God for every one of those also. So with that logic then I can go out and kill someone but then you would have to blame that on God right?”
— Clarion Students for Life president Thomas McConnell, on Ramsey’s logic.
