The pros and cons of living off campus

Comments Off 22 October 2009

Students want to make their college experiences memorable. Many students at Clarion University find that living off campus allows them more freedom to make the most of the best years of their lives.
Clarion University students have plenty of options when it comes to where they can live during the school year. Some students prefer the dorms, suites, or apartments available through campus housing provided by the university. Others would rather take a step away from the university and get a house or apartment in the Clarion County area near campus.
The university has guidelines that students must meet before they can move off campus.
Those students who must live in university- affiliated housing include: first-year students who are enrolled full time, transfer students (who have earned less than 24 credits at a previous institution) who are enrolled full time, first-year and transfer students who have earned less than 30 credits at the completion of their first year of residence, and students in university-affiliated housing who are not in good academic standing after their first year of residence on the university campus.
There are many things students must consider before looking into living off campus. One of the most important things they need to look at is price.
Not only are they going to be paying the rent for the apartment or house they want to get, but there are many things that most landlords will not provide, such as furniture, kitchenware, and other important amenities. Utilities not included in the payments may include heat, water, and electric. Things like that can make it difficult to afford.
Students have to pay for so much during the semester that it is important to find a place that has a reasonable price. As college students, funds are low and students want to get what they need for a price they can afford.
Luckily, a majority of off campus apartments and houses are reasonably priced so students can not only afford the rent, but also other things they need to live comfortably. There are pros and cons of living off-campus.
When you live off campus it is difficult to get the chance to meet other students. Being around people continually, such as when you are living in the dorms or suites, you are able to meet more people and get to know a wider range of people. When you live off-campus, you do not have that same opportunity since you are not around a lot of people.
According to Vanessa Roth and Sydil Tomas, Freshmen living on campus, it makes it easier to network when you aren’t good at meeting new people.
At the same time, it can be beneficial for students to spend time by themselves to concentrate on studies.
Being around other people all the time makes being a good student difficult to do.
Not only that, but the pressure in college for students go out and socialize when they should be working is easier to resist with fewer people around.
Living on campus gives students a lot of restrictions that students who live off campus don’t have to worry about. A good example of this is the quiet hours enforced in all on-campus housing.
Yes, students who live in a residential neighborhood need to be respectful of their neighbors, but they are not going to have to hush each other if they are talking too loud.
Most student who are looking for off-campus housing are looking for a few major things, one being location. Most students want to find someplace close to campus. There are a lot of apartments and houses for rent in the immediate area around campus that satisfy this requirement.
Living close enough to campus will allow students easier access to activities around campus and a closer walk to class.
Students who are interested in living away from campus have a few choices when it comes to looking for their off-campus housing.
They can find a listing on the Clarion University Web site, look at ads in local newspapers, or talk to local realtors to find exactly what they want.
