Many motivational speakers come to Clarion University and present their views in unique ways: last night Dr. Mike Dunphy used his passion for martial arts as a means of encouraging motivation and leadership.

The presentation, “Leading as Champions in Life,” started with exercise. Dunphy had the audience stand up and stretch. He incorporates martial arts into his seminar by teaching students simple skills and relating them to leadership with a goal of helping his audience to create and sustain ongoing success.

In his slide show presentation, he spoke about different martial art moves and tied them into leadership.

“We fight to ignite our motivation, wealth, challenge, energy, doubt and failure,” he said.

Dunphy relates rolling your wrist out of a grab with someone to leadership.

“Leadership is little things with incredible impact,” he said.

Dunphy says that leadership allows one to help others to bring their best out. He said great leaders see potential in themselves and their team.

He stressed that leaders need to be open to learning new things, and that learning is not limited to educational facilities.

“You can know more about what you already know,” Dunphy said.

He said that lifetime leadership comes from the willingness to be free in mind. With great leadership, Dunphy says one will be able to help others bring their beset out and still able to see potential in themselves and their team.

Dunphy then introduced the audience to three tactics to be a great leader. The first tactic is to choose a champion attitude everyday. The next is to decide to launch. He said that everyone has a “black belt” in something, referring to an individual’s talents.

“Talent isn’t always what you think it will be,” Dunphy said.

Dunphy’s third tactic to great leadership is to renew or re-energize one’s self every day and that one must be healthy to be able to lead others.

Dunphy is an international speaker, author and business consultant. He has been teaching and training in martial arts since 1971. He is the president and CEO of Mike Dunphy Enterprises. He was brought to Clarion by the Center for Leadership and Involvement.
